If F1 was a load of balls
Being starved of F1 races can do some strange things to you. It can allow your brain to wander off down weird rabbit holes as you try to fill the void left by no on track action.
When this week also saw us release a music video to go with Brian's sandwich rant remix then going off on a tangent really shouldn't come as a surprise!
Which F1 rabbit hole did we go down you ask?
Well back in the early days of the podcast we did an episode that featured a "what if F1 drivers were fast food franchises".
Turning our attention to the teams instead we have gone for...
What sports teams would each F1 team be and why.
Brian and I wrote a synopsis of each current Constructor to summarize how we view them.
Then we read them back and tried to align that same summary to a team from each of our favorite non-F1 sports.
Brian went for NBA teams and I went for English Premier League teams.
So both talking balls as usual.
Here's how it went down.
Mercedes
Historical team that were good, then went into the wilderness for a while but have recently been right back at the top of the sport and setting the standards for others to follow. Might have other contenders moving in on their territory right now but still right up there at the top end of the sport.
Importantly, rival fans feel that sometimes the officials favor them in key moments but their fans vocally feel it’s the other way around.
Verdict - Mercedes are Liverpool/Boston Celtics
Red Bull
Like Mercedes, also a team with history but success has come to them more recently. The talent on display is undeniable and they are renowned for their technical prowess. Loved by their fans but often in the cross hairs of other fans.
Verdict - Red Bull are Manchester City/Golden State Warriors
Ferrari
They had a period when they were superb and led by great players and astute management. Since then they have fallen away and every time they look to be mounting a challenge they find a way to fall off the pace. Their strategy & tactics have been brought into question on multiple occasions as they fail to get the most out of what appears to be a superb team.
Verdict - Ferrari are Chelsea/Los Angeles Lakers
McLaren
Used to be good and had periods of sublime performances & results. For a period were seen as the team to beat and helped change the landscape of the sport. Keep threatening to get back into the big time but have been off the pace for a while. Right now it feels like they might be getting their act back together but as they also have a tendency to throw it all away the fans cannot get too excited.
Verdict - McLaren are Arsenal/Brooklyn Nets
Williams
Was a time when they were utterly dominant and no one could seem to beat them. However, they are now are a shadow of their former selves and success is something found only in the memory banks of the fans. Seems like they are a very long way from getting back to the performances & results of yesteryear. Despite this they are still a big, well known name.
Verdict - Williams are Manchester United/New York Knicks
Aston Martin
Well known team with lots of history but current results don’t seem to go along with the heritage and well known name. Look to be very far away from challenging despite investment.
Verdict - Aston Martin are Aston Villa/Detroit Pistons
Alfa Romeo
Historical team which are considered a big name in the sport but maybe more for sentimental & romantic reasons rather than current results. Have had a recent uptick though and people tend to like them and hope they do well.
Alpine
Another team that tends to be liked by rival fans. Might be down to them being underdogs and punching above their weight. While they have had great players they have a history of their big names being tempted away by bigger teams. They do have one big win to their name and everyone was happy for them.
Alpha Tauri
Have a record of having some big names who have ultimately left for bigger teams to further their careers. Bit of a rollercoaster team that can look great one moment then flirt with disaster the next. Get compared to their “neighbors” a lot who are more successful.
Haas
Team colors feature white with trims in other colors. They have some big names in their line up and managers who get very animated are a theme with them. Reliability issues often destroy performances and ultimately mean they don’t win anything. Ever.
Verdict - Haas are Tottenham Hotspur/Houston Rockets
On that note we'll leave you to debate why we got any of these wrong or any alternative suggestions you would have made.
If anyone wants to do this from the point of view of another sport, please do and let us know your verdicts!
Until next time,
Brian & Rob
